Progress on Transforming Global Food Systems
13:00 - 13:30As President & CEO of World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Peter Bakker engages on a daily basis with CEOs of over 200 leading companies. He communicates a clear message: “the need to transform global food systems is more urgent than ever before, it is now or never. If you feel tomorrow will be the same as today, you are missing the sense of urgency for a radical change”.
In his opening key-note, Peter will share his views on what is needed, supported by tangible actions. Don’t expect a “doom and gloom” approach on climate emergency, the loss of nature and growing inequality but a story of opportunities for sustainable food production around the globe providing healthy diets. Business, well-established corporates and disruptive early-stage startups, unprecedented leadership and a shift in mindset are a pre-requisite for 9+ billion people to live well.

Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making
13:30 - 14:00From creating the iPod, the iPhone and Nest Learning Thermostat to investing in food and agtech… what can we learn from an entrepreneur and venture legend about investing in the technology transformation of food and agriculture?
At F&A Next in 2019, Tony shared his motivation: “The future of agriculture is going to be driven by the innovative small and midsize farmers. There are millions of family farms around the world and in countries with varying economic circumstances, which is why it is paramount for startups to think regional from the onset and to build products accordingly- designing differently for different areas around the world. By investing in these up-and-coming businesses, we can empower farmers with the tools to democratize the sector and drive real disruption and change.”
Tony is keen to revisit Wageningen and Adam Anders of Anterra Capital will question him on his latest investments in food & ag as well as his book Build, full of personal stories, advice and insights, to be released around F&A Next.

The True Value of Food
16:00 - 16:30As of its beginning in 2016, Berry Marttin has been a strong supporter of F&A Next by contributing on stage multiple times. This time Berry will discuss the value of food. Current food prices don’t cover all benefits and costs related to food production and consumption. Simultaneously, trade-offs between various (environmental) effects complicate consumer food choices. How could these externalities be internalized while assuring healthy, nutritious and sustainable food is affordable for consumers and profitable for producers?
-
Panel - Alternative Proteins: Boom or Bust?
16:30 - 17:00Health and environmental concerns have ignited demand for alternative proteins. And the industry is responding. The number of alternatives in meat, seafood, cheese and dairy is growing rapidly. So too is the number of investors looking for promising alternative proteins opportunities. As such, alternative proteins may easily be regarded as the holy grail to a more sustainable and carbon-neutral food system. Rightly so, or are we amidst a new hype that is bound to collapse? Are we becoming (too) blind-sided?
Three industry insiders will share their observations on the future of alternative proteins, including its challenges up to the alternatives for today’s alternative proteins.
-
Panel - Consumer Behavior: Changing for Sustainability?
17:00 - 17:30The COVID pandemic impacted consumption patterns in multiple ways. It led to the shutdown of the out-of-home market, boosting home grocery spend and meal-kit delivery. It pushed and transformed businesses to drive digitalization, likely to stay post-pandemic. Climate change and sustainability have become important to consumers when making food choices, but are they willing to pay for it with food prices on the rise?
Dick Boer (Nestlé), Maartje Frederiks (Plus Retail), Koen Boone (The Sustainability Consortium) and David Welch (Synthesis Capital) will share their insights and debate consumers’ appetite to contribute to a sustainable future of food in this panel discussion, moderated by Yoni Glickman (PeakBridge).

Ukraine Crisis, Ripple Effects on the Transformation of Global Food Systems?
10:05 - 10:30The Ukraine-Russia conflict affects international food supply. Over 50 countries are dependent on these two countries for feed, fertilizer and food. It casts doubts whether international markets will receive enough food to meet import needs. The situation underlines the need for more local production of sustainable food. Obviously, climate change can’t be ignored either.
A broad range of tech and biological innovations will be needed to secure stable food supplies. Harry Smit of Rabobank Food & Agri Research will share the bank’s observations on how the current situation in Ukraine may impact the transformation of global food systems.

Panel - Universities Driving Innovation in Food & Agriculture
10:30 - 11:00The challenges of agriculture are both complex and multifaceted. We need bold, innovative and scalable solutions to transform across the food & ag value chain. Partnerships including academia, government and industry can drive vital research resulting in new and relevant opportunities for producers and food businesses.
Universities encourage and support entrepreneurship by accelerating IP development and the development of startups aimed at building sustainable food systems. What can and should universities do more or better to drive innovation even further? Join the discussion!

Transforming Food & Ag in Emerging Markets
11:00 - 12:00Some 500 million smallholder farmers produce 80% of the food consumed in the developing world. With a growing number of mouths to feed, a decrease in available agricultural land and stagnating food production, especially in Africa, food security is at serious risk.
Smallholder farmers often operate at around 20% of their potential capacity. Improving their skills and access to financial resources and digital solutions may give an unprecedented boost to sustainable food production in developing countries. What is needed for a fast and wide-scale implementation of smart, digital agricultural solutions by smallholder farmers?
Marieke Roestenberg, Manager of FMO Ventures Program, will interview leading digital innovators from Africa, India and China on how they contribute to efficient and sustainable food production in their markets.

Panel - Regenerative Farming, Biological Farming and Vertical Farming: Bedfellows for Future Food Security?
13:30 - 14:00Climate change, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and a growing and urbanizing population, all require bold and scalable innovations in agriculture to ensure future food security. Universal prescriptions or recommendations will not work; instead, successful models need to be flexible and built on local knowledge. All stake holders are motivated to protect natural resources by reducing the negative environmental impact of agriculture. Organic, regenerative, ecological and sustainable are today’s buzz words, often interpreted differently. Agricultural productivity needs to rise. Farming practices preventing further soil erosion, pollution and reduction of water use need to be implemented. Are these are achieved through precision agriculture, integrated pest management, high-efficiency irrigation and avoiding chemicals or are other forms of agriculture technology needed to ensure future food security around the globe?

Panel - Impact Investing: Fixing the Transformation of Global Food & Agriculture?
14:20 - 14:50The number of investors that invest with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return is growing. However, not all investments in food & ag transformation will generate desirable returns. This leaves us with a series of questions: how to finance a sustainable food & ag value chain? Are impact investors in food & ag funding transactions others shy away from? And is investing in disruptive technology and innovative business models sufficient to transform global food systems?
Four investors from around the globe will share their approach to systemic change in food & ag, positive impact and healthy returns.
